Pilots
Volume II continues where Volume I leaves off. The early pages
deal with the Schooners of Northern Europe. Outrageous stories of the Hooghly
Pilots (Calcutta) follow, as does a notably well-researched chapter on the
picturesque craft of the Portuguese. The second half of the book is taken up
with a study of undecked pilot boats, from the thrilling beach yawls of Norfolk
and Suffolk, through the piratical luggers of Deal to the cunning Dublin Bay
hobblers and the heroic men of the West of Ireland who were still boarding ships
from canvas curraghs into the 1950s. Volume II is a worthy messmate to its
predecessor, with fabulous illustrations and a read that will keep a sailor
going for many a winter's night by the fireside.
