Consultancy

After a lifetime of cruising, teaching, examining and skippering to high levels, I find I am often asked for guidance or an opinion. Sometimes this may be an 'expert opinion' to be used in a legal dispute, but often a private client merely wishes to save trouble and expense by tapping into my experience.

Consultations might be as short as two hours, or they can run into many days. I have worked with private individuals on yachts ancient, classic and ultra-modern, from 25 to 60 feet with rigs varying from gaff sloops to giant unstayed carbon aerorogs. I have also advised larger organisations such as US Sailing. Over the years, I have helped out over many unusual questions. Some of the more regular ones are:

bulletLitigation opinions on questions of seamanship. These have varied from minor injuries sustained in small open craft to precedent-setting issues relating to major ocean races
bulletChoice of a design and sometimes a builder for a new cruising yacht
bulletSeeing a client through the selection and purchase of a used boat
bulletEntering the Yachtmaster scheme - how to set about the practical examination
bulletRecurring boat handling problems and other challenges of general seamanship
bulletTraining professional yacht skippers and instructors
bulletCruise selection and planning
bulletGaff rig. How to use it, modify it, design it and generally extract the best from it
